A technique that ‘zaps’ airborne viruses with short-wave UV light shows great promise for limiting the spread of Covid-19 in public indoor spaces. Hospitals and laboratories often use germicidal UV light to sterilize empty rooms and equipment. However, conventional germicidal UV light cannot be used in the presence of people because it can cause health problems for the skin and eyes. Far-UVC light, which has a wavelength in the range of 205 to 230 nm, cannot damage human cells. But these wavelengths can kill viruses and bacteria, whether airborne or on surfaces. <\/p>\n\n

The research team’s experiments have already shown that far-UVC is effective in eradicating two types of seasonal viruses (those that cause coughs and colds). In collaboration with infection specialists, the light is now being tested against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. “With encouraging results,” says Brenner. <\/p>\n\n

If widely applied, Brenner believes the technology has the potential to control future epidemics and pandemics. “Our system is an inexpensive, safe solution to eradicate airborne viruses minutes after they are exhaled, coughed, or sneezed.
